Dear colleagues,
a reminder that a Theory Center Meeting is scheduled for next week in Nikhef. As usual, please register at
http://www.nikhef.nl/pub/theory/registration/index.php
See below for the agenda. I look forward to see you there.
Best wishes, Eric
Agenda April 27 Time: 10.00 - 17.00
Talk 10.45-11.15, H320 Jan Weenink (UU) "Gaussian entropy of fermionic systems"
Student talk: Time: 15.00 - 16.00 Student meeting/discussion Chiara Toldo (UU): "Black holes in supergravity"
Einstein-Maxwell theory can easily be embedded in supergravity, and, in particular, black holes arise as solutions of specific supergravity theories. The main aim of my talk is to explain some basic features of supergravity, and to introduce the concepts of extremal and supersymmetric black hole. Extremal black holes are important for the so-called attractor mechanism, that I will briefly explain. Time permitting, I will discuss some characteristics of black holes that asymptotically approach Anti-de Sitter spacetime arising as solutions of gauged N=2 supergravity.
Talk 16.30-17.00, H320 Chris White (Glasgow) "From soft gluons to gravitons"
The study of infrared singularities remains a highly active research area in a variety of quantum field theories, and has a number of phenomenological and formal applications. After motivating why we should care about IR singularities, this talk will briefly review their structure in QED, QCD and quantum gravity, and examine the similarities and differences between these three contexts. Furthermore, recently presented methods for examining singularities in Anti-de-Sitter space will be discussed, revealing an intriguing continuous relation between the IR singularities of QED and quantum gravity.
