Vicente Atal (Leiden): "Creation of particles in the Universe - the theory of reheating"
I will review the process by which particles are created after the inflationary era. These are thought to be created by the decay of the inflaton - the particle associated to the scalar field driven inflation, through a combination of perturbative and non perturbative processes. I will discuss some toy models as well as more realistic ones and show in what sense the process of reheating can be used to study dark matter candidates in the supergravity context.
Talk 16.30-17.00, H320 Rob Knegjens (Nikhef) "Lessons from B_s lifetimes"
The CP violating phase present in the mixing of neutral B_s mesons, predicted to be small in the Standard Model (SM), is a sensitive probe of New Physics (NP). However, recent measurements of this phase via the standard B_s -> J/Psi Phi decay mode analysis appear to be converging towards the SM prediction and rule out large NP effects. This poses the question of whether smallish NP could be distinguished from the hadronic uncertainties present in the chosen decay mode. In my talk I will discuss alternative decay modes and observables that complement the standard analysis and how their hadronic uncertainties could be controlled. I will focus especially on the usefulness of effective lifetimes, observables that take advantage of the recently measured sizable width difference between the B_s mass eigenstates.
