* Time: 15.00 - 16.00 Student meeting/discussion Michele Maio: "Massless scalars in two dimensions"

The aim of this student seminar is to derive the Virasoro algebra for the massless two-dimensional scalar field. First I show how to describe the two-dimensional surface swept out in spacetime by a (one-dimensional) string. We find the action, the equation of motion and the propagator. In the next (technical) part I discuss the operator product expansion (OPE). With the OPE in hand we then finally deduce the corresponding Virasoro algebra and discuss how to build up the complete spectrum of states from this. If time permits we will touch upon the conformal subtleties coming from working in two spacetime dimensions.
