[Bfys-physics] Nikhef open day 2014

Dear collegues, This year, the Nikhef open day will take place on Saturday 4 October. If you would like to participate in the adventure of explaining b-physics, detector related items, or any science question / personal theory that the general audience may come up with, please let me know! I will send Surya a list of names of people that would like a genuine Nikhef T-shirt, name tag and lunch. (i.e. Going or Going part-time/maybe) So far I registered the following: Going: - Laurent, Greg, Veerle, Maarten, Roel, Mick Going part-time / maybe: - Pieter, Wouter, Jeroen v.T., Siim, Niels Not going: - Elise, Jeroen v.L., Lennaert Please let me know if you want on this list! Nikhef will open up to the public at 12:00, but being there a bit before that to help set things up is always appreciated. Also, if you have any refreshing ideas, they are more than welcome. We will try to run the masterclass on the full screen this year, as well as get some new (upgrade) posters designed. In addition, we hope to rely on the support from last year (OT module / Calo crystal / LHCb maquette / LHCb movie / old posters / etc.) Thanks, Jacco

Hi all, I just realized that the two emails (defense and party) I sent about my defense never reached you, so I copy them below for details. Just as a summary: The defense will be on Thursday 25 September at 13:45 in the Aula of the VU, and will be followed by a small reception. The party will be on the same evening at the Cafe' de Jaren, starting from 21:00. Hope to see you all there, Chiara ============================================================================================================== Dear friends and family, After five years of joys and sorrows the end has finally come (almost), and I am happy to invite you to the defense of my PhD thesis on the: "Performance of the LHCb Vertex Locator and Flavor Tagging Studies for the Measurement of the CKM Angle Î³" that will take place on Thursday September 25th, at 13:45 in the Aula of the VU University (De Boelelaan 1005, Amsterdam). The ceremony will last about one hour, with me giving a short presentation on my work in the first 10 minutes and a shower of questions from the committee for the next 50 minutes :) However it will end, there will be a small reception directly after the defense with some drinks and snacks so, depending on the outcome of the defense, we will either celebrate or try to forget! On the same evening I will then have a party, which I hope that you will all be able to attend (yes, now I am hoping that we will be celebrating)! The exact time and location of the party have not been decided yet, but more information will follow shortly. Last but not least, I will have two 'witnesses' to help me in the period before the defense and to stand by my side during the defense itself. For many of you this will not be a surprise, but I am happy to leave the hard work of paranymphing in the hands of Serena Oggero and Daan van Eijk, whom you can contact in case you have any questions and from whom you will be hearing more in the next two months! Dear all, We recieved replies on the gamma-combination CONF note. To summarize, 1) they will quote the "full combination" asymmetrically as we suggested, with extend lower uncertainty; 78.9 + 5.8 - 7.4 2) they will use the "robust combination" as main result for 3 reasons; the robust combination has better coverage, is more Gaussian and hence better useable in combinations by others, and has been cross checked by the Baysian method. Aanstaande vrijdag is een colloquium over magnesium als constructie materiaal: 5 september om 10.45 in H331. Met atoomnummer 12 en een soortelijk gewicht van 1,7 kg/dm^3 is magnesium een interessant materiaal voor ons ivm stralingslengte en voor andere lichtgewicht constructies. Magnesium heeft ook enkele nadelen. Wim Sillekens (ESA) en Robert Werkhoven (TNO) hebben in het verleden veel onderzoek gedaan naar het materiaal magnesium. Zij zullen een algemene inleiding geven over het materiaal magnesium en vertellen over de diverse onderzoeken die gedaan zijn bij TNO/ESA. Het is in ieder geval de moeite waard om naar het colloquium te komen. Wim is ook verantwoordelijk voor het ExoMet Project. Dit is een EU/ESA onderzoeksproject naar lichte metaal legeringen en nanocomposieten.
