Dear all,
Wouter introduced the LHCb-Paper-2015-021 this morning. He will also collect your comments by Cc before Wednesday and upload the combined comments on Thursday 16 April.
10:30 - 11:00 Discussion of LHCb-Paper-2015-021 by Wouter Hulbergen: "Study of W boson production in association with beauty and charm jets in the forward region" Deadline : 17-Apr-2015 Link : https://cds.cern.ch/record/2006575
Best regards, Tjeerd
Hi Wouter,
See below my comments on the paper.
Groeten, Jeroen
Abstract 5th line: Remove “W ->” in “reconstructed in the W->munu final state” L8: Define the abbreviation QCD. This is the first occurrence. L9: Suggest to write “parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton” to make more clear what PDF abbreviates. L9-10: Suggest to rephrase to “The measured ratio of the W+jet to Z+jet production is a test of perturbative QCD methods” L15: It would be helpful to show the Feynman diagrams here. L32 (more places): remove hyphens in b jets and c jets. Just as you did already for PAPER-2015-016. L49-68: You are using the old template. In particular the references to the LHCb detector (L49) and the momentum resolution (L56) have changed. But please check for other changes as well. L66: add hyphen in high-occupancy events L109: Spell out sqrt(s): center-of-mass energy L124: The | symbol in BDT(bc|udsg) is slightly confusing. Maybe another symbol would be better? E.g. a / or a - ? L132: This is confusing for the outside reader. This section is called “Signal yields”, you define 6 processes, including the top quark to W+jet process. This is in full contradiction with your earlier claim in L26 that the top-quark decay is not included in the signal definition. Please clarify in the text what you mean. L142: Start new sentence after “reconstructed”: “This efficiency is obtained from simulation.” L151 and many more places (L156, L164, L174, L177, L196, L243 etc): change “extract” into e.g. “determine” (see EB guidelines). L151: you can easily remove “final state” without losing information. L166: add comma after mass. L175: remove hyphen in mistag. L182: Suggest to change “missed-muon probability” (sounds a bit awkward) into “muon reconstruction efficiency”. L193: “obtained” can be removed without loss of information. L196: add comma after Ref. [12], L197: add “the relative top-quark content.” L202: make "final states” plural. Table 1: Add uncertainty to the Zj line. Or explain in the caption why these yields have no uncertainties. Table 1: Suggest to replace “mode” by “final state” L240: Add “are obtained from data” L241: “The data are re-fit” is slang. Suggest “The fit is repeated…” L283-293: This summary section is not needed. Strongly suggest to remove most of this section and merge it with the previous section. Suggest to add the fiducial range to the caption of Table 3. Ref.2: Remove “LHCb-PAPER-2014-033” and remove the 2nd arXiv link. Ref.3: Suppose you mean LHCb-PAPER-2015-016? All figures could be improved: - No bold fonts. - Thinner lines - Larger fonts. - Italics where needed for the symbols

Hi Wouter,
I propose to add Feynman diagrams in the Introduction that illustrate the sensitivity to the (anti)-s quark parton density distribution, and that explain why the Wb sample is asymmetric between W+ and W-.
(See att.s for an example..., if I got them right?!)
Cheers, Niels

Hi all,
Here are my comments, interleaved. I do not duplicated those of Jeroen.

Hi Wouter,
See below my comments on the paper.
Groeten, Jeroen
Abstract 5th line: Remove “W ->” in “reconstructed in the W->munu final state”
L.4: There's an inconsistency in the way you write $Z$+jet and $Z+b$ causing different spacings around the +. We suggest $Z$+$b$ instead. This affects many other places.
L8: Define the abbreviation QCD. This is the first occurrence.
L.8 If you go to JHEP use British.
L.17: Stupid question: what's the unit of Q? GeV/c? If so state here that c=1. L.20-27: Are there some bars missing on quarks? Feynman diagrams would be useful.
L32 (more places): remove hyphens in b jets and c jets. Just as you did already for PAPER-2015-016.
L.33: ... which unlike previous c-tagging methods does not require muons or... to identify the jet.
L49-68: You are using the old template. In particular the references to the LHCb detector (L49) and the momentum resolution (L56) have changed. But please check for other changes as well.
L.68 say "approximately 90%"
L66: add hyphen in high-occupancy events
Section 3: The ordering is very unnatural. Start by defining the muon, then the jet, the the muon jet, then the cuts on J_mu+j, then the tagging. L.87: what does "muon candidate that passed the trigger decision" mean? They all passed it. You mean TOS? i.e. the muon that caused the hardware muon trigger to fire? L.96: \pt(j_\mu+j) L.109: say what you do when both muons trigger.
L109: Spell out sqrt(s): center-of-mass energy L124: The | symbol in BDT(bc|udsg) is slightly confusing. Maybe another symbol would be better? E.g. a / or a - ?
... for instance BDT(b vs c) as in Fig. 2.
L132: This is confusing for the outside reader. This section is called “Signal yields”, you define 6 processes, including the top quark to W+jet process. This is in full contradiction with your earlier claim in L26 that the top-quark decay is not included in the signal definition. Please clarify in the text what you mean. L151: you can easily remove “final state” without losing information. L166: add comma after mass.
Fig.2: Inconsistent y axis labels in top plots.
L175: remove hyphen in mistag. L182: Suggest to change “missed-muon probability” (sounds a bit awkward) into “muon reconstruction efficiency”.
L.183: was -> is L.185: \tau lepton.
L193: “obtained” can be removed without loss of information. L196: add comma after Ref. [12], L197: add “the relative top-quark content.” L202: make "final states” plural. Table 1: Add uncertainty to the Zj line. Or explain in the caption why these yields have no uncertainties.
and what does "yields denote the charge" mean?
Table 1: Suggest to replace “mode” by “final state”
L.236: fits described in Sect. 4.
L240: Add “are obtained from data” L241: “The data are re-fit” is slang.
No the mean 2015-001, the Z->mumu paper. That would be clearer if they used the template.
@article{LHCb-PAPER-2015-001, author = "Aaij, R. and others", title = "{Measurement of the forward $Z$ boson cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV}", collaboration = "LHCb collaboration", year = "2015", report = "{LHCb-PAPER-2015-001}", note = "{in preparation}", }

Dear all,
I read the 2nd draft and I find that while the top results are not included, the summary of the top contribution is now better. I may be biased because I read the top paper draft just before it (it will go in circulation today most probably). In any case I think we need to submit both papers at the same time. I don't have specific comments on the text.
Cheers,
Patrick
