Dear all,
We have a new interesting paper assigned. I propose to discuss it at Friday 20 December. Please, respond if you volunteer to introduce the paper and to collect the comments.
Best regards, Tjeerd ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 10 Dec 2013 21:48:02 +0000 From: Rolf Oldeman rudolf.oldeman@cern.ch To: "lhcb-general (LHCb General mailing list)" lhcb-general@cern.ch Subject: First circulation (12-day deadline!) of publication draft for PAPER-2013-064, Search for Majorana neutrinos in $B^- \to \pi^+ \mu^- \mu-$ decay
Dear Colleagues,
A paper is available for your comments:
Title : Search for Majorana neutrinos in $B^- \to \pi^+ \mu^- \mu-$ decay
Journal : PRL Contact authors : Sheldon Stone, Zhou Xing Reviewers : Barbara Sciascia (chair), Christoph Langenbruch EB reviewer : Carla Gobel EB readers : Eugeni Grauges Pous, Hassan Jawahery Analysis note : ANA-2013-083 Deadline : 22-Dec-2013 e-group : lhcb-paper-2013-064-reviewers Link : http://cds.cern.ch/record/1635738 Authors : LHCb Twiki : https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/viewauth/LHCb/MajoranaNeutrino
Note that the usual 14-day deadline has been reduced by 2 days in order to avoid running the first circulation over the christmas holidays
The following institutes are requested to make institutional comments: Warwick, United Kingdom Dortmund, Germany Firenze, Italy UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland NIKHEF, Netherlands
Please send any comments via the CDS system. It is the responsibility of the contact authors to provide replies on all comments made. Subsequent modification to the publication are made in consultation with the referees and during the EB reading. Following this, there will be a final meeting of the editorial board with contact authors and reviewers present where final decisions are made. As the last step a short presentation is given to the collaboration and the paper is sent for publication.
You can find all paper and conference report drafts open for comments via the EB web-page, by clicking on Current Drafts.

Dear all,
As nobody reacted on the invitation below and as many people are communiting these days, we propse to restrict the discussion to just e-mail exchange in the Nikhef group. Please give your comments preferntially tomorrow, but latest on Sunday 21 December.
I will collect them and make a group response which I send around on Monday. Monday evening I will post our comments at CDS.
Best regards, Tjeerd

Dear all,
As promised, here are the comments that I will put at CDS this evening. Please, have a look, especially as I modified Jeroen's comments and added a few of myself.
Best regards, Tjeerd
From Marcel I took:
Congratulations with the draft. We considere it a short and clear paper.
I modified the comments of Jeroen by more insisting suggestions how to change the text.
Comments: Lines 246-253: It is not really clear whether also 'downstream' tracks were used. Since no specific description is given we assume that only 'long' tracks were used. Please, add for clarity a sentence that we select tracks that pass the full tracking system described in lines 224-236.
Line 259: Replace "Then the negative of the momentum sum ... mu- candidate" by "A B- candidate decay vertex is searched by extrapolating the mu-pi+ momentum sum back to a near approach with another mu- track". Otherwise the reader, like us, will certainly get lost here.
Fig.2: - Replace "fits of invariant mass distributions of candidate mass spectra" by "fits of reconstructed invariant mass distributions of candidate B- decays". - Replace "that peak under the signal in (b) and (c) are shaded" by "are shaded; they peak under the signal in (b) and (c)". (There is now no explanation what is the green area in 2a.)
Line 270: - Move "The S background fit gives 17.8+-3.2 events ... respectively" to after line 272 where the selection window is defined. - Replace "range, defined as ... MeV, there are ... events, respectively" by "range of 5238.6 to 5319.8 MeV, defined as m_B- - 2 sigma_m to m_B- + 2 sigma_m, there are 10 S events and 60 L events." Remove 'respectively' here.
Fig.5: There is an issue with the z-binning here, which gives horizontal bands. This can be easily fixed in the production of the plot or, alternatively in the caption be clarified by adding after 'lifetime' "in intervals of 0-1 ps, 1-10 ps, 10-100 ps, 100-200 ps, etc."
I add a few more comments myself:
General: Different names are used for the same object we look for: "Majorana neutrino, 4th generation neutrino, Majorana particle, single 4th neutrino generation, on-shell heavy neutrino, single 4th generation Majorana neutrino, on-shell Majorana neutrinos, higher mass neutrinos". This is quite confusing. Why not use once a full description like "single 4th generation on-shell Majorana neutrino" and for the rest use "Majorano neutrino" like in the title.
Abstract: Replace "lifetimes from zero to 1000 ps are probed" to "lifetimes shorter than 1 ns are searched". Replace "An absence of ..." by "The absence of ...". Add "neutrino" in "of both neutrino mass and lifetime".
Line 214: Replace "Neutrinos can either be their ... or Dirac fermions" by "Neutrinos that are their own anti-particles are called Majorana neutrinos [1], unlike the known electron, muon, and tau neutrinos that can be called Dirac neutrinos."
Line 217: Add "one" in "the most sensitive one".
Line 218: - Add "via an intermediate heavy neutrino" after "modeled". - Is "(In the Letter mention of ... as well)" the official accepted statement? It could be better formulated.
Line 227: Add "of the magnet" after "placed downstream".
Line 314: Add "neutrino" in "The total neutrino decay width".
