Dear colleagues,
The VL-e project is coming to an end in December 2009, and its Medical
Diagnosis and Imaging (VL-e Medical) subprogram is holding a one-day
workshop in Amsterdam as a closing activity.
The program will consist of talks by project members, invited speakers,
a panel and of course a borrel.
The workshop will be co-organized with GridForum Nederland
(http://www.gridforum.nl). All are invited!
Date: 16 December 2009
Location: AMC, Amsterdam
More detailed information about the program and registration will be
available on
http://www.vl-e.nl/vlemed/closingWorkshop.html
Looking forward to meeting you in this last VL-e Medical event!
Best regards,
Silvia D. Olabarriaga

CCGrid-Health 2010 is the second workshop after the successful first
edition in 2009. Co-located with the IEEE/ACM CCGrid conference 2010
in Melbourne, it aims at reserving room for discussion between
HealthCare application developers (including biomedical and
bioinformatics) and researchers in computer science in the field of
grid and cloud computing.
This year, the workshop will feature presentations of selected 6-page
papers and invited short talks from the main CCGrid track. We are thus
looking for contributions including, but not restricted to the
following topics:
* Detailed HealthGrid application use-cases highlighting
achievements and roadblocks
* Exploitation of production grid resources for HealthCare
applications
* Service and/or algorithm design and implementation applicable to
health applications
* Error handling and fault tolerance
* Medical data and metadata management
* Development environments for HealthGrid applications
* Scientific gateways and user environments targeting HealthGrid
applications
Some selected papers may be proposed for a special issue or section in
a journal (to be confirmed).
Important dates:
* Papers due: 18 December 2009
* Notification of acceptance: 11 January 2009
* Camera-ready: 5 February 2010
* Workshop: 17-20 May 2009

The next BiG Grid meeting will be held on Monday 19 October 2009, from
13.30-14.30h in room H3.31.
Agenda:
- Open action items
* Dennis/JJ: PoC release
- Operations summary
- Middleware
- Applications
- Any other business
Due to video conferencing issues, we will use the French MCU; please see
DavidG's previous mail about this. If you are joining via videoconf,
please try to have it up and running at 13.30h.
Minutes of the previous meeting(s) are located here:
https://www.nikhef.nl/pub/departments/ct/grid/2009/
Coming Monday the minutes will be brought to you by Sven.
Have a nice weekend, and see you on Monday,
- Willem van Engen
Hi,
for those of you regular users of the BiG Grid video conferencing setup:
Surfnet discontinued this service because they offer another service
called SURFcontact as of March 2009 and decided to phase out the old MCU.
While I share your surprise and disappointment over this sudden change,
it was apparently announced as early as last year by Surfnet, although
this never reached me.
Things being as they are, this leaves us in a bit of a situation for the
upcoming meetings. For conferencing between two parties it is no problem
to use point-to-point connections, but for multiple users some other
service needs to be used.
The replacement service, SURFcontact, is under consideration, but the
service terms and conditions are much different from what they were.
I'll keep you informed.

Hi,
next week is herfstvakantie, and this rouses my suspicion we may have
(very) low attendance for the regular grid meeting. To suppress this
suspicion I would like to hear from none of you that you won't be there.
Again: if you intend to come, don't send me email.
If email stays below threshold, the meeting will proceed as planned (and
I send the announcement)
Cheers,
Dennis

FYI.
The yearly BEgrid Seminar takes place on 22 October 2009.
The focus of the day is on applications that are installed on BEgrid or
that are running on other
gLite based grids.
Special attention is given to:
- Astronomy and astrophysics
- Chemistry
- Life Sciences
- Physics
Octave, with its extensive tools for solving common numerical linear
algebra problems, finding the
roots of nonlinear equations, integrating ordinary functions,
manipulating polynomials, and
integrating ordinary differential and differential-algebraic equations
has been installed on
BEgrid. A presentation at the BEgrid Seminar explains how to use this
package.
The program in the parallel session features two tutorials:
- the new graphical user interface (P-Grade portal)that will
be made available on BEgrid
will be explained and demonstrated. There will be an extra 'Hands-on
P-Grade Portal" on 23 October
for those that want to start using this type of graphical interface to
the grid. Register
separately for this hands -on workshop at:
<http://www.begrid.be/index.php?module=blog&action=view_comments&id=35>
&action=view_comments&id=35
- BEgrid for beginners: a must for researchers who consider the
use of grid computing.
The full program and registration are available at:

Beste mensen,
Wij hebben een nieuwe collega voor grid-zaken:
Ernst Pijper <Ernst.Pijper(a)sara.nl>
Wie kan hem aan deze lijst toevoegen?
Ernst komt ook om 13:30 naar de meeting, dan zullen we hem voorstellen.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Onno
