Bfys Meeting Friday 18 january at 9:30 in N328 and on EVO*
Paper introduction and discussion: 9:30 "A search for D+(s) to pi+mu+mu- and D+(s) to pi-mu+mu+ decays" by Francesco Dettori http://cds.cern.ch/record/1504407
Veldhoven rehearsals: 10:30 "A new window for new physics in Bs decays to two muons" by Rob Knegjens 11:00 "The Bs meson decay in two muons: a search for rare beauty" by Serena Oggero 11:30 "Measurement of the angle gamma in the unitary triangle in time-dependent Bs to DsK decays at the LHCb experiment" by Manuel Schiller
The presentations will be available (protected under lhcb, etc.) on the Nikhef agenda page and comments can be directly mailed to the speakers.
Best regards, Tjeerd
*)Today Vidyo could not provide the same service as EVO in our meeting room at Nikhef, therefore I decided to book this meeting again on EVO. Universe is the community, as LHCb has been removed.
As a test we can open a room in Vidyo on Friday at 12:00. ========================================================= http://agenda.nikhef.nl/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=2361 ========================================================= You have BOOKED a meeting in SeeVogh Research Network (http://research.seevogh.com).

Hi Tjeerd,
I hate to bring this up, but...
When I start koala, I get a big fat message that I am no longer allowed to connect, since none of my former communities are part of the new SeeVogh network. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I imagine I'm not the only one how will run into trouble with the old EVO setup...
Could we consider to switch to Vidyo, please? (Especially since I strongly suspect that CERN has dismantled the CERN-EVO phone bridge which used to be a convenient back up solution when all else failed, and I can not dial abroad from CERN, so "remote" phone bridges are disqualified...)
I have to say I do not care too much if video/desktop sharing/slide broadcasting works, but sound worked quite well for me in Vidyo, and we send the PDFs around in any case, so that at least should be fine...
Cheers,
Manuel

Dear all,
It seems that at CERN EVO cannot be used anymore. I try to set up Vidyo, although I probably will not manage to get the Polycom incorporated for echo suppression.

Hi Tjeerd,
Cern's evo licence expired on the 1st January. (well actually it expired a year ago, but their "grace period" expired in January).
I'm not sure even if Vidyo "rooms" (with all the local equipment) can be properly set up outside of CERN, we should ask them how that would work. After all, sometimes CERN meetings are not centred on CERN.
Cheers,
Rob

Or maybe we should find funding for a 'Nikhef' community in the new Evo. The SeeBogh website doesn't specify a price. Does anybody have an idea what it might cost? Wouter

Dear all,
I apologise for my connectivity issues in skype in the meeting today, please feel free to drop any comments you may have into my inbox (and I guess there will be plenty - I find this time-dependent stuff is always rather difficult to present in a short time, and I'd guess you could tell).
For the future, since CERN (and I guess also Nikhef) is paying to have Vidyo just work, could we perhaps switch to the officially supported software, please? (And if it does not work, can we make the life of the support team hell? That's what they're paid for. We should not need to waste our time with these things, and in my experience, Vidyo actually works reasonably well.) My experience on skype today was a rather difficult one, with sound dropouts throughout the session, microphones suddenly ceasing to function and a couple of random disconnects... In the end, I got maybe half of the meeting, and the comments I would have liked to hear in person I could not hear at all because skype did not allow me to reconnect...
Cheers, and I apologise again for the connectivity problems,
Manuel

Starting with a very clear request to CERN vidyo support to see what CERN expects to happen at external institutes...

Hi all,
I take the occasion to add that various linux distributions are officially NOT supported by the vidyo support team. For example OpenSuSE which is one of the most common (after Ubuntu). I suppose that CERN will just say: install the cern linux distribution... but this is not the kind of answer I like.
Do you know if there is any plan to make our life easier?
cheers, Francesco

Since both rpm and deb packages are available, it's not too bad. For example I have been using VidyoDesktop-2.2.1-00406.x86_64 with Fedora for sometime without significant issues.
Hope this helps,
Hi Francesco,
According to their roadmap, the Linux support should improve "soon", especially for OpenSuSE, http://information-technology.web.cern.ch/services/fe/vidyo/developments/vid... .
This probably does not help much, but on Arch Linux I got the desktop client working quite easily by extracting the package https://vidyoportal.cern.ch/upload/VidyoDesktopInstaller-sl564-TAG_VD_2_2_1_... and running the usr/bin/VidyoDesktop script from the command line to check if anything went wrong (a few versions ago I had to install old jpeg and png libraries, but that seems not necessary any more). The least straight-forward dependency was that the pulse daemon needs to be running for VidyoDesktop to start.
Cheers, Pieter

Dear all,
Next Monday in the LHCb week (16 June) I will be giving a tour in the LHCb pit to 24 master students from Delft. They follow the course "elementary particles". I would need 2 guides between 15:30 and 17:30.
Would any of you enjoy showing the students around?
Thanks in advance, Cheers, Niels
Hi Rob,
that's essentially what I did until they managed to come up with something that works most of the time on Debian stable. I did start a bit more than half a year early, though, because I knew this kind of thing takes its time...
For the time being, I fear we need to either use our ellbows a bit until Vidyo works for us, or we should stop paying for it altogether (not a realistic option, since we do not have too much control in the decision making process).
Cheers,
Manuel

Could we consider to switch to Vidyo, please? (Especially since I strongly suspect that CERN has dismantled the CERN-EVO phone bridge which used to be a convenient back up solution when all else failed, and I can not dial abroad from CERN, so "remote" phone bridges are disqualified...)
I have to say I do not care too much if video/desktop sharing/slide broadcasting works, but sound worked quite well for me in Vidyo, and we send the PDFs around in any case, so that at least should be fine...

Dear all,
I just checked a way to start up a Vidyo session with the polycom with the help of Roel.
Next time I expect that things will go as we are used to with EVO before.
Again my apologies, I had no time to check it last days and I hoped EVO would be in the air a few days longer.
