Dear all,
this is to inform you that the upgrade finished in time but some
additional restarts were needed to fine-tune the network. The broker network
is now upgraded and fully operational. We will actively monitor its operation
and act as needed.
Please do not hesitate to communicate any issue you may face by this
upgrade.
Best regards,
Christos Triantafyllidis

Dear Colleague,
I would like to call your attention to the next topical workshop organised by
the User Community Support Team of the European Grid Infrastructure. The
topic of the workshop is "e-Science Workflows".
The event will be hosted by the Hungarian NGI in Budapest and will be
co-located with another workshop organised by the SHIWA project on a similar
topic. Find the details in the below CfC.
I encourage you to participate in the workshop and to distribute the call
further within your project and/or community.
Best regards,
Gergely Sipos
Call for Contributions
Joint Workshops on e-Science Workflows in Budapest
http://go.egi.eu/workflowworkshops
EGI and SHIWA are joining forces to run a combined workshop event that will
be hosted by the Hungarian NGI in Budapest on 9-10th of February 2012. The
workshops will focus on the use of workflows in e-Science and in the European
Grid Infrastructure in particular, and will aim to present "the art of the
possible" from the perspective of those involved in delivering the service,
and try to explore "what is needed" from the perspective of users in
scientific researchers in the user community. In other words, we aim to put
stakeholders (developers and users of grid services) together in one room so
that we can collectively determine how best to advance "Scientific workflow
systems" in this demanding and dynamic field.
Why a joint EGI and SHIWA event and why in Budapest? Well, the answer to the
first questions is that there is a great deal of "Synergy" in our two aims
and as such, the target audience is likely to be an overlapping one. The
combined event means that we can all hope get even more value from
participating, there being an opportunity to not only learn about some of the
existing workflow systems used in EGI but also, to influence the future
development of such systems for our grid infrastructure. As regards the
second question, Budapest is a beautiful city with a strong and proactive
scientific community that is full of innovative ideas - how could anyone
refuse an invitation to visit the city, especially when being hosted by our
colleagues in the Hungarian NGI?
For the SHIWA Workshop (Thursday 9 Feb 2011), partners of the SHIWA project
will deliver presentations explaining the following key points:
- What is the purpose of the SHIWA project?
- What workflow services are delivered during the project? How can these
services be useful to a workflow community?
- How can workflow communities use the SHIWA services (store and submit
workflows, etc.)?
During the following day (Friday 10 Feb 2011), EGI seeks participants who can
deliver short presentations covering any or all of the following as well as
anyone who is willing to contribute to the ensuing discussions/debate
following the talks:
- What kind of e-Science workflow management system and best practices are
the most widely used and/or are emerging within your community? How many and
which projects, scientific collaborations, Virtual Research Communities or
National Grid Infrastructures are supporting these?
- What requirements do the user and operation communities have concerning the
use, operation, integration and further-development of scientific workflow
services?
- What kind of new services should EGI provide for scientific communities and
for technology developers to support the integration of workflow systems with
National Grid Infrastructures?
- How could a wider and more harmonised adoption of these technologies be
facilitated within EGI? What role should EGI.eu, the NGIs and projects play
in this process?
Join us in Budapest in February and help define the future of scientific
workflow - give a presentation on behalf of a workflow user group, workflow
technology or service developer/provider, National Grid Infrastructure or any
other EGI stakeholder!
The deadline to submit presentation proposals to the EGI part of the workshop
is the 15th of December. Please read the details for submission on the
website of the joint events: http://go.egi.eu/workflowworkshops.
Submitted proposals will be reviewed and selections made by 22nd of December.
Registration will open 6 January once the programme for the workshops has
been finalised.
This event represents the first of a series of such workshop sessions on
scientific workflow - a follow-on workshop is expected to be conducted at the
Community Forum in March 2012.

Dear users,
GOCDB v4.2 has been released into production.
This release includes:
- Scoping of Sites and Service Endpoints into EGI and Local categories. Sites
and SEs marked as being part of the EGI grid will be exposed to the central
operational tools while Local entities are not considered part of the EGI
infrastructure.
- Many bug fixes and large scale refactoring of the database and MVC logic as
part of the earlier v4.1 release.

Dear all,
we have planned the update of the PROD broker network software for next
week on Tuesday 29/11 at 11.00 UTC time.
The update procedure needs to completely stop the network (all the brokers)
and restart it in the new version. While this operation normally should take
a few minutes, we schedule a DT for 2 hours to be on safe side.
What will be upgraded?
We are upgrading from ActiveMQ 5.3 to ActiveMQ 5.5, this resolves many issues
that we have faced and reported in past. Major issues that will be solved by
this release:
- The periodical need to clean the persistent data store (removal of messages
that haven't been consumed either because no-one needs them or because their
consumer is dead) of the brokers in order to be able to restart them.
- Ability to use wildcard subscription instead of CAMEL (which was a single
point of failure)
Why now?
We have tested the new version on the TEST broker network during the last
month and we are happy with the results. Our plan was to have the new version
of ActiveMQ software deployed before the end of the year. Deploying it within
November will allow us to monitor the service closely before Christmas
vacations.
Who is affected?
Every producer or consumer of the PROD broker network. SAM as the key user of
the broker network uses the broker network for the following functions:
a) Retrieval of gLite WN results from WNs to sam-nagios box
This is the only operation that will be actually affected. Given that WNs
will fail to either find or connect to the broker network, they will not send
results back to the sam-nagios box thus no alarm should be raised. On the
other hand the job that wraps the WN probes will probably timeout which may
cause an alarm on CE/CREAM-CE jobSubmit probes. Normally sam-nagios boxes
schedule one job submission per hour and the alarm is raised on the second
WARN/CRIT result so this should also not raise any alarm.
b) Submission of SAM results from sam-nagios boxes to central DBs
The sam-nagios boxes will fail to either find or connect to the broker
network during the DT period. All results are cached locally at a directory
queue on sam-nagios boxes thus if they fail to send them, they'll try later.
Results are timestamped thus this should not create any issue except of delays
c) Submission of SAM results from sam-nagios boxes to operation portal(s)
As with central DBs, SAM results will stay in directory queue. Given that a
sam-nagios may connect to the broker network before operation portal(s) after
the upgrade, this may create a time window in which messages may not be
consumed. Operation portal and SAM team have already implemented an
synchronization procedure which will fix such issues.
d) Other applications
Other applications that might unofficially use the PROD network without
registering could also be affected. As we don't know their usage pattern, we
cannot perform risk analysis.
Thank you for your understanding,
Christos Triantafyllidis
