See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: LIAPARINOS, Panagiotis Submitted on: 05 February 2014 17:38 Title: Light emission measurements of LFS-3 and GAGG:Ce single crystal samples under X-ray radiographic conditions Abstract content Abstract: Inorganic scintillating crystals are employed as radiation to light converters in most medical imaging modalities. This study presents a comparative investigation of the luminescence emission properties of LFS-3 (Zecotek Photonics Inc) and GAGG:Ce (Furukawa Co Ltd) single crystal scintillators under medical X-ray excitation. Both scintillating materials have dimensions of 10x10x10mm3 and 10x10x20mm3. The Absolute Luminescence Efficiency-AE (i.e., the light energy flux over exposure rate) and the so-called Effective Efficiency-EE (i.e., the light spectral compatibility with electronic optical sensors were investigated under X-ray excitation in the radiographic energy range from 50 to 130 kVp. The AE and the EE parameters of the examined scintillators were found to increase with the X-ray tube voltage. The maximum AE value was found equal to 41.22 E.U (1 E.U equal to μW•m-2/mR•s) for the GAGG:Ce scintillator at 130kVp X-ray tube voltage whereas for the same tube voltage the maximum AE for LFS-3 scintillator was equal to 22.29 E.U. This increased efficiency to the above X-ray voltage can be attributed to the high density of the materials, which enhances X-ray photon absorption, and their high light output. Both scintillators have higher efficiency than LSO:Ce (standard scintillator used in PET) which measured equal to 18 E.U. under the same conditions, thus LFS-3 and GAGG:Ce crystals might be considered for further research as suitable radiation detectors in medical imaging. Most of the methods for their detection are based on their coupling to photons, one of the most promising ones being the helioscope technique. We will report on the current status of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope and the future International Axion Observatory (IAXO). Recent results from the second part of CAST phase II, where the magnet bores were filled with 3He gas at variable pressure achieving sensibilities on the axion mass up to 1.2 eV, will be presented. Currently CAST is expecting to improve sensitivity to solar axions with rest mass below 0.02 eV/c^2 after the upgrade of the X-ray detectors and with the implementation of a second X-ray optic. At the same time, it is exploring other possibilities at the low energy physics frontier. On the other hand IAXO, the fourth generation axion helioscope, aims to improve CAST's performance in terms of axion-photon coupling by 1-1.5 orders of magnitude. The details of the project building a dedicated magnet, optics and x-ray detectors will be given. The Large Area Picosecond Photodetector (LAPPD™) is an MCP based photodetector, capable of imaging, with high spatial and temporal resolution in a hermetic package with an active area of 400 square centimeters. A key component of LAPPD™ is a chevron pair of large area (203 mm x 203 mm) MCPs. The manufacture of these large-area high performance MCPs has been enabled by the convergence of two technological breakthroughs. The first to be presented, is the ability to produce large blocks of hollow, micron-sized glass capillary arrays (GCAs) developed by Incom Inc. The Incom process is based on the use of hollow capillaries in the glass drawing process, eliminating the need to remove core material by chemical etching. The arrays are fabricated as large blocks that can be sliced to form large area wafers, without regard to the conventional limits of L/d (capillary length / pore diameter). Moreover, borosilicate glass is less expensive than the prior-art leaded glass, and is more environmentally friendly. The second breakthrough to be presented is the advent of atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating methods and materials to functionalize GCAs to impart the necessary resistive and secondary emission properties suitable for large area detector applications. Recent results demonstrating the high performance, uniformity and long term stability of the current MCP product under various operating conditions will be presented. The large-angle photon vetoes (LAVs) must detect particles with better than 1 ns time resolution and 10% energy resolution over a very large energy range in order to reject the dominant background. A low threshold, large dynamic range, Time-over-threshold based solution has been developed for the LAV front end electronics (LAV-FEE). Our custom 32 channel 9U board uses a pair of low threshold discriminators for each channel to produce LVDS logic signals. The achieved time resolution obtained in laboratory, coupled to an HPTDC based readout board, is ~ 150 ps. For LAV-FEE, a FPGA-based level-0 trigger providing slewing-corrected trigger time with similar precision has also been developed. A reduction of several orders of magnitude of the event rate is needed to reach values compatible with detector readout, offline storage and analysis capability. The CMS experiment has been designed with a two-level trigger system: the Level-1 Trigger (L1T), implemented on custom-designed electronics, and the High Level Trigger (HLT), a streamlined version of the CMS offline reconstruction software running on a computer farm. Both systems need to provide an efficient and fast selection of events, to keep the average write-out rate below 450Hz. For Run II, the doubling of both the center of mass energy to 13 TeV and the collision rate to 40 MHz, will imply increased cross sections and out-of-time pile-up. Tracking is essential for the reconstruction of objects like jets, muons, electrons and tau leptons starting from the raw data from the silicon pixel and strip detectors. Track reconstruction is widely used also at trigger level as it improves objects tagging and resolution. The CMS tracking code is organized in several levels, known as 'iterative steps', each optimized to reconstruct a class of particle trajectories, as the ones of particles originating from the primary vertex or displaced tracks from particles resulting from secondary vertices. Each iterative step consists of seeding, pattern recognition and fitting by a kalman filter, and a final filtering and cleaning. Each subsequent step works on hits not yet associated to a reconstructed particle trajectory. The CMS tracking code is continuously evolving to make the reconstruction computing load compatible with the increasing instantaneous luminosity of LHC, resulting in a large number of primary vertices and tracks per bunch crossing. This is achieved by optimizing the iterative steps and by using new software techniques. Tracking algorithms used in CMS are described; physics and computing performances are discussed with respect to Run 1 and Run 2 physics program and within CMS future upgrades. Abstract content The Large Hadron Collider forward (LHCf) experiment is designed to measure the hadronic production cross sections of neutral particles emitted in the very forward angles in p-p collision at the LHC. LHCf has reported energy spectra of forward photons and neutral pions at √s = 900 GeV and 7 TeV proton-proton collisions measured at LHC. Forward spectra can be helpful in verifying cosmic ray interaction models. The next operation in 2015 is expected under much higher radiation dose. Therefore, we are upgrading the detectors, especially their scintillators, to be radiation harder one. Plastic scintillator layers and Scintillating Fiber (SciFi) tracker are replaced with GSO layers and fine GSO hodoscope respectively. Basic properties of new sensors of the upgraded detector are measured by 400 MeV/n carbon beams at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) in June, 2012. Energy resolution and position resolution of the upgraded detector are evaluated by using electron beams of 50-250 GeV at Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in summer, 2012. The results are understood by Monte Carlo simulations and are good enough for the requirements of the LHCf experiment. See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: Mr. ZABI, Alexandre Submitted on: 04 February 2014 20:32 Title: The CMS calorimeter trigger upgrade for the LHC Run II Abstract content The CMS experiment implements a sophisticated two-level online selection system that achieves a rejection factor of nearly 10e5. The first level (L1) is based on coarse information coming from the calorimeters and the muon detectors while the High-Level Trigger combines fine-grain information from all sub-detectors. During Run II, the LHC will increase its centre of mass energy up to 13 TeV and progressively reach an instantaneous luminosity of 2e34 cm-2s-1. In order to guarantee a successful and ambitious physics program under this intense environment, the CMS Trigger and Data acquisition system must be consolidated. In particular the L1 calorimeter Trigger hardware and architecture will be modified. The goal is to maintain the current thresholds (e.g., for electrons and photons) and improve the performance for the selection of tau leptons. This can only be achieved by designing an updated trigger architecture based on the recent microTCA technology. Racks can be equipped with fast optical links and latest generation FPGAs can be used. Sophisticated object reconstruction algorithms as well as online pile-up corrections can thus be envisaged. The plan to consolidate the CMS trigger system will be presented as well as the recent hardware and firmware developments. Algorithms to select efficiently electrons, photons, tau leptons or jets will also be presented along with the expected performance. Summary The presentation will cover details of the CMS data acquisition and trigger upgrade planned for the next run at the LHC, concentrating on the replacement of the Level-1 calorimeter trigger. As the LHC restarts and delivers higher luminosity collisions, exceeding the design parameters, the current CMS trigger system will not be capable of maintaining the high efficiency required for the CMS physics programme. The replacement of the trigger system is also a good opportunity to consider even more efficient ways of selecting electrons, photons, tau leptons, reconstructing jets and performing energy sums. In these intense conditions, the implementation of pile-up mitigation techniques is required to reach acceptable performance. Modern technologies offer an effective solution to achieve these goals. The trigger primitives generated by the detector will be transmitted by newly installed optical link boards (4.5 to 6.4 Gb/s) replacing the existing copper cables (1.2 Gb/s), to a new system based on the microTCA electronics standard. The system is based on custom designed AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Boards) with Xilinx Virtex 7 FPGAs. These FPGAs use 10Gb/s MGTs to gather information from the entire calorimeter for each event in one FPGA, where sophisticated algorithms may be implemented. The complete view of the calorimeter will allow the trigger to compute global quantities such as the average energy density that can be used to estimate the pile-up level. The resulting increase in rejection power will permit the experiment keep low trigger thresholds on physics objects. The talk will cover the design, development and testing of the components of the new trigger system, including results from recent demonstrator systems at CERN and elsewhere. The talk will also detail the algorithms under study, and put in perspective the CMS physics goals for the next LHC run. The new system will allow the experiment to efficiently select low momentum leptons to pursue the full characterisation of the Higgs sector, in particular including VBF production modes, as well as searching for cascades initiated by SUSY particles.
