Dear Tipp2014, I just tried to submit an abstract, but cannot as I do not have a CERN account, and do not use personal social media accounts for business. Many US physicists will not have CERN accounts, and almost certainly most US industrial partners and technical folks will not as well. The login presents a real barrier for non-European detector folks in submitting abstracts (this may be part of the reason you may have gotten fewer than expected, if I can guess one reason for the recent delaying of the deadline). I couldn't find an easy way to get a CERN `lightweight' account- would it be possible to get explicit instructions on how to submit an abstract from the US? Large size Micromegas gaseous detectors (40x40cm² active area) which are used in COMPASS tracking since 2001 need to be upgraded in order to cope with the foreseen higher beam intensities (up to a few hundred of kHz/mm²), and in order to be active in the beam area where the present detectors are blind. Sparks generation between electrodes by highly ionizing particles is a major issue for Micromegas detectors at high hadron flux; several studies are lead to cope with it, most of them focused on resistive layers deposited above the read-out anodes. Beside studies done on specific resistive Micromegas detectors using buried resistor technology, our group did a lot of efforts to study, in view to reduce spark rate, hybrid detectors, which are a combination of a non-resistive Micromegas board and a pre-amplifying GEM foil. Performance of both hybrid and resistive detectors where measured in test beams and in the COMPASS environment with both muon and hadron beams. Hybrid detectors showed very promising results in term of spark rate reduction as well as spatial and time resolutions, and efficiencies. Two hybrid detectors were finally installed as active trackers at COMPASS for the 2012 run, becoming the first Micromegas detectors featuring a spark reduction technology used in an actual high flux particle physics experiment. The preparation of the detector production is presently in progress, and all the Micromegas detectors will be replaced by hybrid ones for the next COMPASS run in spring 2015. After a presentation of the project and its constraints, an overview of the performance of both resistive and hybrid detectors will be given, with an emphasis on the interest of hybrid Micromegas. The comparison between both types of detectors will be discussed, based on detector performance as well as on the capacity for the industry to build such detectors and on their cost. The impact on the tracking efficiency of the detector reconstruction optimization will also be discussed with the particular case of the highly occupied beam area, and the possibilities to optimize the detector design for the final production will be presented. The gaseous phase should also show better electron to nuclear recoil discrimination based on the ratio of ionization to scintillation signals (S2/S1). The addition of trimethylamine (TMA) may further improve the energy resolution due to the Penning effect with atoms of xenon. Good energy resolution is of particular importance for 0νββ decay searches. Molecular interactions may shift the 172 nm light from pure xenon to the 280 – 320 nm range, in which TMA fluoresces, matching the excitation peak of wavelength-shifting commercial plastic. High light collection efficiency and better SNR of S1 and S2 may thus be possible, leading to even better electron to nuclear recoil discrimination. In addition, TMA may also be the key for sensing directionality of nuclear recoils induced by Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) without the need of track imaging in monolithic massive (ton-scale) detectors, by making use of columnar recombination. Nuclear recoil directionality may be the path for a definite discovery of the WIMP nature of Dark Matter. An ionization chamber has been constructed to explore the properties of high pressure gaseous Xe + TMA mixtures. Charge and light signals (primary scintillation and electroluminescence) are measured as functions of pressure, electric field and additive concentration. We present preliminary results for pressures up to 8 bar and additive concentrations up to 1%. This work has been carried out within the context of the NEXT collaboration. These technologies differ in active material, ganularity and readout systems. The Analog Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCal) reads out the signal height of the energy deposition in each calorimeter cell, while the digital HCal detects hits by firing RPC pad sensors above a certain threshold. A 3 bit readout is provided by the semi-digital HCal, which counts hits above three different thresholds per cell. For these three options different energy reconstruction procedures are developed. The analog data can also provide digital information, thus the advantages and disadvantages of different energy reconstruction procedures can be studied. \\ In this work this comparison is done by applying these procedures to AHCal beam test data collected with the 1m$^{3}$ physics prototype at CERN. These studies are complemented by a full analog energy reconstruction using software compensation techniques to improve the energy resolution based on local energy density information, which is connected to the intrinsic sub-structure of hadronic showers. For these measurements, the full CALICE calorimeter system, with a silicon-tungsten ECal, and analog HCal and a tail catcher, is used. Effort is ongoing to develop the use of BCM1F as an online bunch-by-bunch luminosity monitor. Infiniband promises to provide substantial increase in data transmission speeds compared to the older 1GE network used during the 2009-2013 LHC run. It is designed to measure the bunch-by-bunch relative luminosity to high precision. It consists of a set of small angle telescopes each with three planes of pixel sensors. The full PLT will be installed in CMS for the first full energy operation of the LHC in September 2014. In the 2012-2013 LHC run a pilot PLT detector was installed consisting of both single-crystal diamond and silicon sensors giving a first look at their performance in a continuous high-rate environment. This was the first operation of a diamond pixel tracking detector in a high energy physics experiment and is providing the first data on diamond pixel sensors under high particle rate in a high radiation environment. We will report on the design, construction, testing, and installation status for the 2014 installation as well as report the findings of the single-crystal diamond based pilot detector. In addition we will discuss high-rate studies of polycrystalline diamond sensors for potential use in the PLT for the 2014 installation. The requirements are a single-hit timing resolution better than 200ps RMS, a hit loss of less than 1% in the presence of a (highly non-uniform) beam rate up to 1MHz/cm^2. This hit rate leads to an expected data rate at the output of the chip which can reach 6Gb/s. The TDCPix comprises an asynchronously operating pixel array of 40 columns of 45 pixels, each 300 microns x 300 microns. This is instrumented with 40 Delay Locked Loop based time-to-digital converters connected to data buffering and concentrating logic. The read-out uses four 3.2Gb/s serialisers with the high speed clock being provided by a low-noise on-chip PLL. The high data rates negate the possibility of buffering whilst awaiting a trigger, thus a self triggering architecture has been adopted. All configuration and state logic in the design deemed critical for the correct operation of the chip has been triplicated to provide increased single event effect tolerance. A number of on-chip digital-to-analogue converters provide threshold generation and trimming and are configurable through a single-signal configuration interface. The configuration and DAQ interfaces include a DC-balanced protocol layer permitting direct optical connections when the ASIC is installed in the experiment. Dedicated calibration circuitry is included to enable the required timing resolution to be reached. The chip has been manufactured in a commercial 130nm process and testing is underway. A detailed description of the architecture and performance results will be presented. The use of low background x-ray detectors is an essential component contributing to the sensitivity of these searches. In this work, we review the recent advances on Micromegas detectors used in the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) and proposed for the future International Axion Observatory (IAXO). The actual setup in CAST has achieved background levels below 10-6 keV-1 cm-2 s-1, a factor 100 lower than the first generation of Micromegas detectors. This reduction is based on active and passive shielding techniques, the selection of radiopure materials and offline discrimination techniques, thanks to the high granularity of the readout. We will describe in detail the background model of the detector, which is based on its operation at CAST site and at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC), as well as on Geant4 simulations. The best levels currently achieved at LSC are as low as 10-7 keV-1 cm-2 s-1, showing good prospects for the application of this technology in IAXO. Finally, we will present the R&D for reducing the energy threshold of these detectors below 1 keV, using high-transparent windows, autotrigger electronics and studying the cluster shape at different energies. As a high flux of axion-like-particles is expected in this energy range, a sub-keV threshold detector could enlarge the physics case of axion helioscopes. See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: PROCUREUR, Sebastien Submitted on: 30 January 2014 13:50 Title: Genetic multiplexing for particle detectors Abstract content Modern physics experiments require particle detectors with excellent performance, in particular the spatial resolution of trackers. This usually leads to systems with very high numbers of electronic channels, from 10,000 to several millions. All these channels represent a significant cost of an apparatus, even if in many cases the useful signal is concentrated on a small fraction of them, for a given event. Using the redundancy of the signal, in particular in Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs), we have developed a multiplexing technique that can considerably reduce the size of the electronics. A first Micromegas prototype has been tested with 1024 strips readout by 61 channels, showing à 90% efficiency to MIPs. Another prototype built from the resistive technology will be tested in April, to reach efficiency close to 100%. This multiplexing can be easily used in physics experiments to optimize the size of the electronics to the incident flux, and extended to other types of detectors. Furthermore, it offers many new applications beyond particle physics, like in volcanology or archeology. Several industrials also express interest for this technology, in particular for mining exploration.
