See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: MILANOVIC, Borislav Submitted on: 19 February 2014 11:04 Title: A prototype for the data aquisition of the CBM Micro Vertex Detector Abstract content The Compressed Baryonic Matter Experiment (CBM) will be installed at the SIS-100/SIS-300 accelerators of the FAIR facility, which is currently under construction at Darmstadt, Germany. Its purpose is the study of hadronic matter in the region of highest net baryon density with rare probes, e.g. open charm particles. To reconstruct those particles, a Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) with a spatial resolution of few micrometers and high frame rate capability ($> 33\ \rm kHz$) is required. This MVD will rely on CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) developed by the PICSEL group of IPHC Strasbourg. Integrating the MAPS into the global strategy of CBM requires a free streaming, dead-time free DAQ which is able to synchronize up to $300$ sensors and to handle a continuous data stream of $\sim 30\ \rm GB/s$. We introduce our concept for a readout system fulfilling those requirements and discuss results from a test run at the CERN-SPS. This work is supported by BMBF ($\rm 05P12RFFC7$), HIC for FAIR, EU-FP7 HadronPhysics3 and GSI. Summary CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) provide an excellent spatial resolution in the order of few micrometer in combination with a low material budget (50 micrometer thickness have been demonstrated) and high radiation hardness. The active volume of the devices is formed by the epitaxial layer of standard CMOS wafers. This allows the integration of pixels together with analogue and digital data processing circuits on-chip. The MIMOSA-26 MAPS integrates functionalities like pedestal correction, correlated double sampling, discrimination and a data sparsification based on zero suppression combined with a pixel matrix of $2\ \rm cm^2$. The pixel array composed of $576$ lines of $1152$ pixels is read out in a column-parallel rolling-shutter mode. One discriminator per column and the digital data processing circuits are located on the same chip in a $3\ \rm mm$ wide area beneath the pixel matrix allowing for binary hit encoding. This area also contains the circuits for pedestal correction and the configuration memory, which is programmed via JTAG. The preprocessed digital data is read out via two digital $80\ \rm Mbit/s$ data links per sensor, which push their data based on a low-level protocol. The first CBM Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) prototype based on MIMOSA-26 sensors was recently assembled. To study its tracking performance, it is built as a dual-layer micro-tracking device with four additional sensors arranged in a line as a beam telescope device. The micro-tracker is sandwiched by two reference stations, again based on the same sensor type, on both sides, respectively. The results demonstrate a detection efficiency above $98.5\%$ and a spatial resolution below $3.8$ micrometer for a high-energy pion beam at the SPS. In the context of the CBM-MVD prototype project, we developed a scalable and free-running DAQ system which allows to steer and to operate multiple MIMOSA-26 sensors. Both, the sensor control and the data management was carried out by TRBv2 boards developed by the HADES collaboration, which were complemented with general-purpose add-on cards. Among the functionalities realized in the FPGAs of those boards were data reduction, quality monitoring, data transportation and slow control of the freely running sensors. The data was time stamped and transferred via $2\ \rm Gbit/s$ optical links to a local computer. In this setup the total bandwidth of the prototype system was $100\ \rm MB/s$, however the highly scalable implementation allows extending this limit with additional hardware as needed. Furthermore, the modular design of the FPGA firmware supports also newer MIMOSA generations, e.g. MIMOSA-28 as used in the STAR detector and MISTRAL which is currently under development for ALICE. The beam test at the CERN-SPS validated our design choices and the system could be operated synchronously and dead-time free for several days. A procedure to keep the sensors synchronous even under stress conditions was successfully tested. We introduce the concept of the DAQ system of the CBM-MVD and show beam test results demonstrating the capability of the concept to operate sizable detector systems based on CMOS MAPS. We additionally discuss recent improvements to further increase the system performance. A new monitoring system will be installed in the CMS cavern for measuring the beam background at high radius. This detector is composed of synthetic quartz Cherenkov radiators, coupled to fast photomultiplier tubes (PMT). The readout chain of this detector will make use of many components developed for the Phase 1 upgrade to the CMS Hadron Calorimeter electronics, with a dedicated firmware and readout adapted to the beam monitoring requirements. The PMT signal will be digitized by a charge integrating ASIC (QIE10), providing both the signal rise time and the charge integrated over one bunch crossing.The backend electronics will record bunch-by-bunch histograms, which will be published to CMS and the LHC using the newly designed CMS beam instrumentation specific DAQ. A calibration monitoring system has been designed to generate triggered pulses of light to monitor the efficiency of the system. The detector system, and in particular, the validation of the electronics choices with measurements will be presented. ITER is an experimental nuclear reactor operating with a magnetic toroidal ﬁeld of 5.3 T, plasma current of 15 MA, pulse duration up to 500 s and producing up to 700 MW fusion power. It is aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear fusion realization generating DD and DT fusion reactions with characteristic neutrons 2.5 and 14 MeV. The neutron emission profile is measured Vertical Neutron Camera (VNC). ITER VNC requires: 12-bit digitizer with sampling rate from 250 MHz to 1 GHz; count rate up to $10^7$ events/s; on-line digital technique for separation and reconstruction pile-up. Taking into account the above-mentioned specifications Digital Multichannel Analyzer for ITER VNC is based on ADC12500PXIe digitizer. It is developed in our workgroup and included into ITER Catalog of I&C products – Fast Controllers (345X28 v2.3). ADC12500PXIe digitizer is a two-channel waveform recorder with reconfigurable data processing unit, based on FPGA. Each measuring channel built on 12-bit ADC with 500 MHz sampling rate and high frequency bandwidth (0-250 MHz) and has programmable gain and zero line position. Data processing unit was configured for Digital Pulse Analyzer (DPA). DPA performs pulse height analysis using on-line algorithms implemented in the FPGA and waveform registration for debugging and monitoring. Pile-up events are detected and reconstructed using several digital processing algorithms, such as triangular or trapezoidal filter. Developed software includes three system levels: Linux device driver, EPICS driver, Human Machine Interface (HMI). See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: BRUNNER, Thomas Submitted on: 19 February 2014 01:36 Title: Barium-ion tagging for $^{136}$Xe double-beta decay studies with EXO Abstract content The nature of the neutrino, i.e. whether it is a Dirac or Majorana particle, remains a mystery. Decay experiments that search for the lepton-number violating neutrino-less double decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) are an experimental approach to answer this question. EXO-200 is one such experiment, searching for a $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal in the $\beta\beta$ decay of $^{136}$Xe to its daughter isotope $^{136}$Ba. This detector, located at the WIPP site in New Mexico, USA, contains ~200 kg liquid Xe enriched to ~80%. In order to further push sensitivity, it is necessary to suppress the background (currently dominated by gamma rays) and increase the mass of the parent isotope. A unique advantage of a Xe time-projection chamber (TPC) is the possibility to extract into vacuum and identify (to tag) Ba-daughter ions. This tagging possibility, combined with enough energy resolution to separate $0\nu\beta\beta$ from $2\nu\beta\beta$ decays, allows one to dramatically reduce the background of the measurement to virtually zero. EXO has started development of nEXO, a multi-ton scale TPC. In addition, Ba-tagging techniques, in both liquid and gas phase TPCs, are under development. In a liquid Xe TPC, the Ba ion will be extracted mechanically by a probe. In a high pressure (10 bar) gas Xe TPC, the Ba ion will be extracted into vacuum through a supersonic nozzle combined with an extraction RF-funnel. The current status of these Ba-tagging techniques will be presented and possible future developments will be discussed.
