See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: ZHAO, Chengxin Submitted on: 24 February 2014 19:19 Title: Performance of the ALICE PHOS Front-end Electronics in LHC RUN1 Abstract content The Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) is one of the sub-detectors of the ALICE experiment, which comprises three modules. Each PHOS module accommodates 112 Front-end Electronics (FEEs), which are divided into 4 readout partitions. Each FEE consists of 32 sets of high gain and low gain signal channels. In LHC RUN1, pedestal runs and LED runs dedicated to test the performance of the PHOS FEEs were performed. The evaluations are taken in the aspects of the pedestals, the peaking time of the shapers, and the gain ratios of the high gain channels to their corresponding low gain channels. In this paper, both their short-term and long-term performance will be covered. The PHOS event size, which is referred as the size of the data recorded by all the PHOS FEEs for single event, should be stable in all the physics runs of the same type. Hence, it could be used to monitor the noisy and dead channels in PHOS FEEs. The PHOS event size observed in Pb-Pb collisions, p-Pb collisions, p-p collisions and pedestal runs will be presented in this paper. In addition, the working status of the PHOS FEEs which the event size revealed will also be discussed. The performance demonstrates that the PHOS FEEs fulfilled the requirements of physics data reconstruction and was working as what we expected during the last four years. This sensor is utilized for observing phase-modulated laser in an interferometer of gravitational wave (GW) detectors. The GW detectors are well sophisticated apparatus that need accurate position controls for mirrors. The laser modulation/demodulation is used for readout of the mirror displacement in such accurate control. Laser sideband signals created by phase modulation become very important not only for the control but also sensitivity of detector because the quality of controls affect a noise level. We are preparing this phase camera for VIRGO, which is a GW detector placed in Pisa. The sideband signals in power recycling cavity are easily degraded by mirror aberrations in VIRGO. In order to correct such mirror aberrations, CO2 laser and compensation plates will be prepared, and then, our phase camera will be used to see mirror aberrations through the state of sidebands. Hence, this phase camera can contribute to VIRGO for making high performance controls. In order to establish and maintain a high constant activity concentration of thoron progenies easily, the compensation system based on air circulation between a cylindrical chamber with 212Pb activity concentration over 10000 Bq.m-3 and the thoron reference chamber has been developed.The stable concentration of 212Pb in the cylindrical chamber depend on a constant solid 220Rn source and certain aerosol concentration level ranging from 1000 per cubic centimeter to 10000per cubic centimeter. Then dynamic balance of thoron progenies between the growth from the cylindrical chamber and the losses due to plate-out, decay and sampling in the thoron reference chamber has been established. A air flow of 20L•min-1 simulate sampling of calibrated instruments to eliminate concentration fluctuations caused by that in the thoron reference chamber. By this method 212Pb with wide various activity concentration ranging from 60 Bq•m-3 to 3000 Bq•m-3 are produced under different compensation and stimulation flow, and an overall uncertainty of less than 5% in the reference chamber. When concentration of thoron progenies changed from one level to another, it takes about ten hours to establishing new radioactive equilibrium. In this app\-li\-cation of particle physics detectors standard HEP techniques encounter new challenges.\\ \indent The REGARD group of Wigner RCP (Budapest) has deve\-lop\-ed a portable muon telescope for outdoor measurements with sensitive area of 0.1 m$^2$ and weight of 15 kg~\cite{1,2,3}. The designed detector is based on the novel Close Cathode Chambers~\cite{4,5} which provide a cheap, easy handling, lightweight, high efficiency detector system, able to work even at harsh conditions. A time projection chamber of 2.4 l with a novel configuration formed by two symmetric drift regions with two microbulk-Micromegas readouts is used to measure the recombination of $\alpha$- and $\gamma$-particles, which are emitted in coincidence by an $^{241}$Am source. A gas mixture of 98\%Xe+2\%TMA is used, varying the pressure from 2 to 10 bar, and the reduced drift field within 10-400 V/cm/bar range. Both $\alpha$- and $\gamma$-particles exhibit recombination as the electric drift field decreases, being stronger for $\alpha$- particles. This is partially explained by columnar recombination due to the dependency observed with the track angle (relative to the direction of electric drift field). The comparison of the data with the theoretical models for recombination will be shown and discussed. These results support a suggestion that has been recently put forward on how to obtain a directional signal in the recoils induced by Dark Matter interactions with xenon-gas. In fact, there are already efforts trying to pursue directionality but with very low masses. See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: LIPPMANN, Christian Submitted on: 24 February 2014 08:45 Title: Upgrade of the ALICE detector Abstract content A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) is the detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) dedicated to the study of strongly interacting matter, in particular the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. The ALICE collaboration plans a major upgrade of the detector during the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) of the LHC, which is at present foreseen to start in summer 2018. The upgrade strategy is based on collecting > 10 nb$^{-1}$ of Pb-Pb collisions at luminosities up to L = 6 x $10^{27}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ corresponding to a collision rate of 50 kHz, where each collision is shipped to the online systems, either upon a minimum bias trigger or in a self-triggered or continuous fashion. Since the TPC drift time of 100 $\mu$s is 5 times longer than the average time between interactions, the presently employed gating of the TPC wire chambers must be abandoned. Instead, continuously sensitive readout detectors based on Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) will be implemented. Furthermore, the present silicon tracker will be replaced by a new design entirely based on monolithic pixel chips in order to achieve significantly increased secondary vertex resolution and high tracking efficiency. Other ALICE sub-detectors are upgraded to read out Pb-Pb data at 50 kHz with nominal performance. Highly efficient triggering will be ensured by a new interaction trigger detector. A new online system will be implemented that is capable of receiving and processing the full detector information. We will present the planned ALICE upgrade concept together with a description of the individual detector upgrade plans. To achieve this performance, a new structure of the diamond detector and a dedicated front-end electronics have been developed. The results obtained will be compared with standard mono and polycrystalline diamond detectors. This new structure of the detector together with the dedicated front-end electronics suggest the possibility to realize diamond detectors for MIPs with time resolution of the order of few tens ps. The research on this technology started in the context of the development of MicroMEGAS detectors for the ATLAS muon system upgrade. By sputtering carbon layers of varying thickness (a few hundred to a few thousand angstrom) the surface resistivity can be controlled between $400$ kΩ/sq. and $2$ GΩ/sq. Several small ($10\times 10$ cm$^2$) and medium size foils ($50\times 100$ cm$^2$) have been produced and successfully tested. The next step is to produce foils of the final size of $2.2 \times 0.5$ m$^2$ required for the ATLAS MicroMEGAS. The carbon layer is deposited on thin ($50$ to $100$ µm) insulating foils (e.g., polyimide) by sputtering resulting in a good uniformity ($<30$%) of the resistivity. Extremely fine electrodes structures ($<50$ µm) can be achieved using the liftoff process technique. The foils produced so far are extremely robust with respect to mechanical and chemical d! amage. We report on the fabrication technique and the performance in operating detectors. Its main features include a very low capacitance, then a potential low energy threshold independent of the volume, a good energy resolution, robustness and a single detection readout channel. Applications range from radon emanation gas monitoring, neutron flux and gamma counting and spectroscopy to dark matter searches, in particular low mass WIMP's and coherent neutrino scattering measurement. Laboratories interested in these various applications share expertise within the NEWS (New Experiments With Sphere) network. SEDINE, a low background spherical detector installed at underground laboratory (LSM) is currently being operated and aims at measuring events at very low energy threshold, around 100 eV. We will present the energy calibration with $^{37}$Ar, the obtained energy resolution with different gas mixtures at different pressures, background reduction using pulse shape analysis, measurement of detector background and its interpretation, and show anticipated sensitivities for dark matter search with SEDINE.
