See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: ELAGIN, Andrey Submitted on: 28 February 2014 17:09 Title: Measuring directionality in double-beta decay and neutrino interactions with kiloton-scale scintillation detectors Abstract content We present initial studies of a technique for separating scintillation and Cherenkov light in a large liquid scintillator detector in order to reconstruct directionality for electrons with energies typical of neutrino-electron scattering (5 MeV) and double-beta decay (2.1 MeV and 1.4 MeV). On average scintillation light is delayed with respect to the direct Cherenkov light due to chromatic dispersion and the finite time of the scintillation processes; early light thus contains directional information. Using a GEANT4 simulation of a 6.5m-radius spherical detector with 100% coverage of photodetectors having transit-time-spread (TTS) of 100 ps, we have shown that a time cut on the early light is effective at isolating the directional light, improving the ratio of Cherenkov to scintillation light from $R_{c/s}$=0.02 to $R_{c/s}$=0.63 for 5 MeV electrons originating at the detector center. This ratio is degraded by a factor of 2.5 if typical photomultipliers with TTS=1.28 ns are used. The ratio for TTS=100 ps can be further improved by a factor of 1.6 by using red-enhanced photocathodes, or by 1.4 by using narrow-emission scintillators. We discuss a technique for extracting particle direction, and evaluate several detector developments in timing, photodetector spectral response, and scintillator emission spectra that could be used to realize direction reconstruction in a kiloton-scale detector. See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: FISCHER, Horst Submitted on: 28 February 2014 17:08 Title: TIGER – A Fast Trigger Processor based on Sampling ADCs and Real-Time Feature Extraction Abstract content For the upcoming measurements of deeply virtual Compton scattering at the COMPASS-II experiment at CERN/SPS we have developed a modular high speed (1GS/s) and high resolution (>10.5 effective bits) sampling ADC module, which allows for trigger decisions based on digital comparisons of signal amplitudes, coincidence times and geometric conditions. Featuring digital pulse processing in real-time to bypass hardware discrimination the firmware resolves pile-up pulses for double or triple signal overlays. Summary The hit information obtained from the sampling ADC system is buffered for the subsequent readout. In parallel a version of this hit information, although reduced in data volume, is provided as trigger primitives with a fixed latency for a digital trigger subsystem. The trigger primitives from up to 18 GANDALF modules contained in a single VME64x/VXS crate are transmitted via the backplane to the so called TIGER module. The synchronous transfer protocol was optimized for low latencies and offers a bandwidth of up to 8 Gbit/s per link. The key components of the TIGER module is a Xilinx Virtex-6 SX315T FPGA, offering vast programmable logic, embedded memory and DSP resources. It is complemented by an additional dual-port double-data-rate memory, a computer-on-module with an Intel Atom processor and a mobile PCI Express graphics processor mezzanine card, respectively. Besides the VXS backplane ports, the board features two optical SFP+ transceivers, 32 LVDS inputs and 32 programmable LVDS outputs and a Gigabit Ethernet port for configuration and monitoring. The GANDALF module by itself is a 6U-VME64x/VXS carrier board which can host two custom mezzanine cards. Although our initial focus was on the digitization of signals from the recoil detector we tried to keep the module as general as possible. Exchangeable mezzanine cards allow for very different applications such as analog-to-digital (ADC) or time-to digital (TDC) conversion, coincidence matrix formation, fast pattern recognition or fast trigger generation. Thousands of glass spheres holding a set of 31 small area photomultipliers will be deployed at high depth forming a tri-dimensional matrix. The glass spheres, called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs), will detect the Cerenkov light induced by neutrino interactions with the surrounding matter. A relative time calibration between photomultipliers is required to achieve an optimal performance. Two different types of calibration are going to be performed in KM3NeT: Intra Detection Unit (DU) calibration, where relative calibration between DOMs of the same DU is done, and Inter DU calibration, where calibration of different DU is achieved. The intra DU calibration is achieved by means of the Nanobeacon, an electronics board flashing a LED integrated in DOM, meanwhile the intra DU calibration is obtained using the Laser Beacon, an instrument installed at the bottom of the detector. In the current article both devices are presented. The PureB layer is formed by a pure-boron chemical- vapor deposition (CVD) in a manner that allows integration of nanometer thin boron layers as light-entrance windows. At the same time the PureB layer provides an effective p+ doping of the semiconductor surface to form a nm-thin p+n junction. The basic PureB photodiode process is quite straightforward and has high compatibility with CMOS technology. Moreover, ideal diodes can also be fabricated with deposition temperatures from 700°C down to 400°C meaning that the process is compatible with back-end CMOS. Photodiodes made with PureB-only light-entrance windows have been optically characterized in the UV/VUV/EUV spectral ranges for a number of deposition conditions and post-deposition treatments. Most of the characterization is performed on mm-large photodiodes showing near-theoretical responsitivity and high-stability even for high-dose EUV exposures. Moreover, for integration in high-sensitivity imaging arrays, micron-sized photodiode pixels have been fabricated and operated in Geiger-mode with a low dark-count rate of 5 Hz at room-temperature for Ф4-μm devices. In all cases, it is shown that keeping the PureB layer intact is essential for maintaining the superior responsivity and stability performance. To enable this, special processing techniques have been developed. Particularly challenging is the case when pixel integration demands high-temperature post-PureB-deposition treatments and/or removal of extra layers deposited on the PureB. KM3NeT is composed of an On-Shore Station which connects via an optical network to a matrix of underwater sensors, called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs). Bulk data will continuously flow from the sensors to the On-Shore Station and only a limited amount of bandwidth will be used for Slow Control. Therefore the physical topology of the optical network is asymmetric in order to significantly reduce the cost of the undersea electrical/optical cable. The same network is used to synchronize the sensors (within 1 ns) using White Rabbit technology. The requirements for timing accuracy and the asymmetry of the network make the system highly complex. Every single DOM has a unidirectional 1Gb/s uplink through which it delivers the acquired data to the On-Shore Station. The on-shore station has a unique unidirectional 1 Gb/s downlink to reach all the DOMs, this is called the broadcast or Slow Control (SC) link. This topology highly reduces the communication resource cost, but it requires customizing the communication elements and modifying the White Rabbit (WR) protocol that is embedded in them, especially at the On-Shore Station side. The present article explains the On-Shore station of KM3NeT and the modifications needed in the WR switches in order to implement the broadcast in detail. In the case of LAPPD, hermetic sealing between the entrance window and the detector body is complicated by the square shape of the detector and the large area. While this technique has been developed in a glove box filled with an inert gas, it can be adapted for the use in a vacuum transfer assembly process. GPGPU bring high performance computing with off-the-shelf products. However the full exploitation of this new computing paradigm will not be possible if software applications only partially employs massive parallelism. High Energy Physics experiments have much to gain adopting this new computing paradigm. In fact, the expected gain in performance both in reducing the application latency or in dealing with the data high throughput increase will allow to employ systems based on GPGPU for data acquisition increasing the available computing power with smaller electric power consumption. All these features are very interesting for using GPGPU at trigger level in an on-line environment to provide fast decision and high rejection power. In view of possible applications in a trigger system we will show, using realistic examples based on data from current LHC High Energy Physics experiments, the improvement in performance of typical HEP intensive computing applications after tuning and optimization for running on GPGPU. The methodology to improve the performance will also be shown together with results using different GPGPU architectures. In particular the porting to GPGPU architecture of two typical HEP reconstruction algorithms will be shown: tracking in the inner detector and jet clustering in the calorimeter. Tracking in the very dense LHC environment is very challenging with multiple minimum bias interactions superimposed to the high transfered momentum one. Both pattern recognition and track fitting would benefit from massive parallelism for high troughput processing that can be fully exploited at trigger level. Also jet clustering with the very fine granularity of LHC experiments calorimetry would profit from the massive parallelism offered by GPGPU. See below a detailed summary of your submitted abstract: Conference: Tipp 2014 - Third International Conference on Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics Submitted by: MESSINA, Marcello Submitted on: 28 February 2014 16:29 Title: Columbia Univeristy R&D program for large mass DarkMatter detector with LXe TPC Abstract content The next generation of Dark Matter detectors based on dual-phase (liquid/gas) Xenon Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) will require an active volume of liquid with a mass on the tonne-scale in order to reach the desired sensitivity to WIMP-nucleon interactions. One natural and effective way to increase the target mass is to build a TPC with larger cross-sectional area and longer drift distance. Construction and operation of such a detector leads to many new issues and technological challenges which need to be addressed. One example is that electronegative impurities in the liquid must be at or below the ppb level, to prevent loss of the charge signal. This challenge can be overcome with an efficient filtering system for the evaporated liquid, capable of a circulation rate on the order of 100 SLPM. This high flow rate, however, requires an increased heat input to take advantage of the high cross-section for purification of the hot Xenon gas. Another well-known, major challenge to a tonne-scale detector is the requirement of very high voltage (~ 50-100 kV) to generate a suitable drift field inside the TPC. Work is under way at Columbia University to study these and other issues associated with the construction of XENON1T with the so-called DEMONSTRATOR R&D program. In this talk, we will highlight the major results of this effort. Summary An extensive R&D program is on ongoing at the Columbia University to address the main technical issues of a possible multi-ton DarkMatter LXe TPC. In this talk we review in detail the studies done so far.
